Isaac Watts. [The Fall and the Redemption.] Written by Isaac Watts, this hymn contemplating human depravity and redemption was first published in his Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1707, Book I, No. 57). The original text comprises 8 stanzas of 4 lines in Common Meter. It was reprinted in subsequent authorized editions of Watts's hymnal collection. The hymn reflects on the sorrow of the Fall of Man and contrasts human sinful nature with the restoration provided through divine grace. In congregational practice, its use has been very limited, appearing only occasionally and almost exclusively in abbreviated forms in a small number of older hymnals.
