Mary Beale (née Craddock), daughter of the minister of Walton-on-Thames, was born in 1632 and died in Pall Mall, London, in 1697. She was one of the most successful portrait painters of seventeenth-century England, and her home served as a prominent meeting place for leading scholars, clergymen, and artists of her day.
In addition to her painting, Beale wrote verse translations of Psalms 3, 13, 70, and 130. Her poetic paraphrases were included in Samuel Woodford's Paraphrase in English Verse, upon the Books of the Psalms (1667).
