Celebrate Immanuel's Name

By Charles Wesley

Lyrics

1. Celebrate Immanuel’s name,
the Prince of life and peace.
God with us, our lips proclaim,
our faithful hearts confess.
God is in our flesh revealed;
heav’n and earth in Jesus join—
mortal with Immortal filled,
and human with Divine.
2. Fullness of the Deity in
Jesus’ body dwells–
dwells in all His saints and me
when God His Son reveals.
Father, manifest Thy Son;
breathe the true Incarnate Word.
In our inmost souls make known
the presence of the Lord.
3. Let the Spirit of our Head
through ev'ry member flow;
by our Lord inhabited,
we then Immanuel know.
Then He doth His name express;
God in us we truly prove,
filled with all the life of grace
and all the pow'r of love.

Matthew 1:21-23; Isaiah 7:14; Philippians 2:9-11; Revelation 19:16

About This Hymn

“Celebrate Immanuel’s Name” is a hymn by Charles Wesley that exalts Jesus Christ as Immanuel, “God with us.” The hymn is joyful and triumphant, focusing on the glory of Christ’s person and the honor due to His name. Wesley’s text combines themes of incarnation, salvation, and kingship, calling believers to rejoice in the presence and reign of the Savior.

The title and central theme are rooted in Matthew 1:21-23, where the birth of Jesus fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy that a virgin shall bear a son called Immanuel. The name means “God with us,” emphasizing that in Christ, God has come near to humanity. Wesley celebrates this truth with praise and wonder, presenting Jesus as both divine and approachable.

Isaiah 7:14 provides the prophetic foundation for the hymn. The coming of Immanuel signifies not only divine presence but also divine faithfulness. God fulfills His promises by sending the Messiah, bringing hope and redemption to His people.

Philippians 2:9-11 declares that God has highly exalted Christ and given Him the name above every name. Wesley’s hymn reflects this exaltation by calling believers to honor and celebrate the name of Jesus. His name represents His authority, His saving work, and His glory as Lord.

Revelation 19:16 describes Christ as “King of kings, and Lord of lords” (KJV). The hymn echoes this royal imagery, portraying Jesus as the victorious and reigning Savior worthy of universal praise.

“Celebrate Immanuel’s Name” is a hymn of joyful worship centered on the person of Christ. It invites believers to rejoice in the incarnation and to proclaim the greatness of Jesus as Savior and King. Through its strong scriptural foundation and uplifting tone, the hymn encourages the church to celebrate the glorious name of Immanuel, the God who has come to dwell with His people.
