Written by the Irish hymn writer Thomas Kelly, this missionary text was contributed to later editions of his Hymns on Various Passages of Scripture between 1838 and 1853. Formatted in four stanzas of eight lines, it appeared in the ninth edition (1853) under the heading "Questions for Conscience." The hymn saw limited adoption in broader collections.
