Composed by Canon William Bright, this morning hymn first appeared in the Monthly Packet for October 1867. It was later included in the second edition of Bright's Hymns and Other Poems (1874) in five stanzas of six lines.

In the revised edition of Hymns Ancient and Modern (1875), the text was published in full as No. 6, with a minor textual alteration in the second line of the third stanza, changing "on Thy grace" to "in Thy grace." The hymn offers a petition for divine guidance, purity, and protection at the opening of the daily routine.
