Composed by Gerard Moultrie, this Easter hymn was first published in his Hymns and Lyrics (1867) in nine stanzas of four lines, bearing the title "Love is stronger than death." In the same year, the text was included in The People's Hymnal (No. 120).
The hymn draws upon the Gospel accounts of the resurrection morning, detailing the devotion of the holy women visiting the sepulcher. In 1872, a revised text beginning "Near the tomb where Christ hath been" was published in The Hymnary (No. 294), adapting Moultrie's original verses for wider liturgical use.
