Written by James Drummond Burns, this New Year hymn was printed in the English Presbyterian Psalms and Hymns (1867, No. 62) and in his posthumous Remains, edited by Dr. James Hamilton (1869, pp. 224–225). Structured in six stanzas of four lines, it is headed "New Year's Hymn" and prefixed with the text of Psalm 65:2.
The text expresses gratitude for past mercies and seeks divine protection for the coming year. It attained a firm position in hymnals across Great Britain, Canada, and the United States, occasionally appearing with the alternate opening line "At Thy feet, O God our Father."
