Composed by Thomas Kelly as the opening piece of a series titled "Reproach of the Cross," this five-stanza, six-line hymn was first published in his Hymns, &c. (1804, p. 26). Its inclusion in William Bengo Collyer's Selection (1812), James Montgomery's Christian Psalmist (1825), and Edward Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody (1833) brought it into common hymnal usage. An adapted Long Meter cento beginning "Shall I to gain the world's applause" was created from lines in stanzas two through four and published in Asahel Nettleton's Village Hymns (1824, No. 411).
