Authored by Charles Wesley, this hymn was first published in Hymns & Sacred Poems (1749, Vol. I) under the title "The way of duty the way of safety." Formatted in five stanzas of six lines, the text reflects on diligence, duty, and divine protection.

In 1780, it was incorporated into the Wesleyan Hymn Book, subsequently spreading across Methodist collections in Great Britain and North America. Augustus Toplady introduced the text into Church of England collections via his Psalms & Hymns in 1776.
