The Parish Hymnal (1873)
The Parish Hymnal (1873) is a significant collection of hymns and spiritual songs compiled by John S. B. Monsell (John Samuel Bewley Monsell, 1811–1875). Published in London by Bell and Daldy, this volume was specifically designed to follow the order of the Book of Common Prayer, making it a practical resource for liturgical services within the Church of England.Monsell was a prolific Irish clergyman and poet known for his "devotional" style, which emphasized a personal and joyful relationship with God. This 1873 publication represents a culmination of his life's work in hymnody shortly before his death in 1875. During the mid-to-late 19th century, the Church of England saw a "hymnal explosion" as various parishes sought alternatives to the standard metrical psalms. Monsell's 1873 collection was part of a movement to provide more lyrical and emotive content for congregational singing. It competed with other famous volumes of the time, such as Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861).Today, the 1873 edition is considered a culturally important work and is preserved in digital repositories like the HathiTrust Digital Library and Hymnary.org.
