Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

Reginald Heber (1783–1826) was an English Anglican bishop, poet, and hymn writer whose texts became influential within the Anglican tradition and beyond. He was born Reginald Heber on April 21, 1783, in Malpas, Cheshire, England, into a well‑educated and devout family. His father, the Reverend Richard Heber, served as rector of Malpas and encouraged his son’s early learning. Reginald was educated at Harrow School and later at Christ Church, Oxford, where he distinguished himself academically, won prestigious scholarships, and developed a deep appreciation for classical literature and Christian theology.

After graduating with high honors in 1804, Heber was ordained in the Church of England and served in various pastoral and academic roles. He became known as a compelling preacher, thoughtful theologian, and supporter of evangelical renewal within Anglicanism. In 1823 he was appointed Bishop of Calcutta, a vast diocese that at the time included much of British India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and other territories. In this role he worked to strengthen clergy training, promote Christian education, and encourage mission work across diverse cultural contexts.

Heber wrote more than one hundred hymns, many of which reflect evangelical themes of Christ’s redeeming work, the life of faithful discipleship, and the mission of the church. His hymns were originally composed for use in parish worship and became widely used in hymnals throughout the English‑speaking world. Among his best‑known texts are “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty,” written for Trinity Sunday, which celebrates the doctrine of the Trinity with rich devotional language, and “From Greenland’s Icy Mountains,” a hymn that reflects his passion for global mission.

Heber’s life of service was cut short when he died suddenly on April 3, 1826, while traveling in India. Despite his relatively brief tenure as bishop, his legacy endures through hymns that continue to shape Christian worship and through his influence on Anglican hymnody and missionary vision.
