Resting in His Promise
By John R. Rice
Lyrics
On the cross my debt He paid.
Then He cried "it is finished"
Ere He in the tomb was laid
Resting sweetly in His promise,
Rest my soul on what He said.
Trusting fully, wholy trusting,
In the price my Saviour paid.
All my sins were laid on Jesus;
On the cross my debt He paid
Then He cried out "it is finished!"
Ere He in the tomb was laid.
Not a blot my record bears,
For my sins the blood all covers,
Jesus' righteous robe I wear.
I am now a son of God.
Of God's nature now partaker,
Now no fear of judgement's rod.
None can take me from His hand,
So the Daviour's promise claiming
Now I live in Beulah Land.

About This Hymn
“Resting in His Promise” by John R. Rice is a hymn that emphasizes the peace and assurance that comes when believers hold firmly to God’s promises. Instead of relying on feelings or circumstances, the Christian is called to lean on the unchanging Word of God. The hymn celebrates the reliability of Christ, who keeps every promise He has spoken, giving His children confidence in His unfailing care.
The message of this hymn is simple yet profound: rest is found not in self-effort, not in worldly stability, but in the faithfulness of God. Rice wrote often about revival, prayer, and personal faith, and this hymn reflects his emphasis on a life anchored to Scripture. It highlights how promises from God’s Word sustain believers through trials, doubts, and uncertainties.
In many churches, “Resting in His Promise” was sung during invitations and revival meetings, encouraging Christians to cast aside fear and trust wholly in Christ. The hymn continues to remind us that rest and assurance come only when we believe that God’s promises are sure, unchanging, and everlasting.
