"Ah, when shall I awake" is an eighteenth-century prayer hymn composed by the English hymnwriter Charles Wesley.
The text was first published in 1741 in his Hymns on God's Everlasting Love (Second Series, No. vii). Written across eleven eight-line stanzas, the hymn expresses an earnest spiritual longing for divine awakening, prayerful vigilance, and full deliverance from sin.
In 1780, six stanzas of the original eleven were selected for inclusion in A Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists (commonly known as the Wesleyan Hymn-Book), where it appeared as No. 294. The complete original text was reprinted and preserved in The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley (1868 to 1872, Volume III, page 61).
