About Jonathan E. Hall

Jonathan E. Hall was a nineteenth-century minister, lyricist, and composer. While historical records offer very few details regarding his life, education, or specific denominational affiliations, his creative contributions speak directly to his involvement in the late nineteenth-century gospel music movement.

In most period hymnals, he is credited simply as J. E. Hall. His full first name, John, is primarily verified through historical hymnal indexes, notably appearing in the thirtieth edition of George C. Elderkin's popular Methodist songbook, The Finest of the Wheat, published in Chicago in 1890.

Hall functioned as both a writer of sacred texts and a composer of hymn tunes. He is credited as the composer of the tune EASTER OFFERINGS. His lyric legacy includes several gospel songs and hymns that gained tract within late-nineteenth-century Christian worship collections, focusing largely on themes of salvation, prayer, personal assurance, and the promise of heaven. His notable written works include:

  • "Are You Ready for the Coming of the Son of Man Today?"

  • "Beautiful Land" (commonly beginning with the line "A beautiful land by faith I see")

  • "Fear Not"

  • "He Knows My Way"

  • "Hear My Prayer My Father"

  • "Hear the News Glad News of Jesus"

  • "Jesus Son of David"

  • "More Than Tongue Can Tell"

  • "Wash Me Clean"

His hymn "A beautiful land by faith I see" (sometimes printed as "A beautiful land of light I see") achieved the most widespread distribution of his works, appearing across dozens of distinct hymnals. The enduring nature of his writing is also evidenced by the translation of his hymns into other languages for global missionary and worship use, including German translations ("Ein herrliches Land mein Glaube sieht") and Arabic translations of his gospel texts.
