"A beautiful land by faith I see" is a nineteenth-century American Sunday School hymn focused on the theme of Heaven. The hymn was first published anonymously in the New York Sunday School collection Shining Star in 1862. In that volume, it appeared as entry number 74 under the title "The beautiful land," written in four stanzas of four lines each, accompanied by a chorus.
The hymn quickly gained traction and found extensive use across various denominations in the United States. Its appeal also crossed the Atlantic, leading to its inclusion in several English Sunday School hymnals during the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
While originally published without an author's name, a credit appeared shortly thereafter. In the 1863 volume of Sunday School Hymn Book, compiled by S. Booth in Brooklyn, the lyric was attributed to "Jonathan E. Hall" This song remains a representative example of the vibrant, heaven-focused Sunday School music movement that flourished in America during the mid-nineteenth century.
