Photizou, photizou, he nea Ierousalem

Ode IX of the Easter Canon by St. John of Damascus (Photizou, photizou, he nea Ierousalem) was translated into English verse by John Mason Neale as "Thou new Jerusalem, arise and shine" (Hymns of the Eastern Church, 1862, p. 52). A blank verse version was also produced by Richard Frederick Littledale (Offices, 1863, p. 219). Commentators have noted that while Neale introduced these Eastern treasures to the English Church, his renderings lack the exultant freedom of the original Greek. Scholars such as Richard Frederick Littledale provided blank verse renderings that offered raw material for metrical adaptation, an approach successfully demonstrated by William Chatterton Dix in Lyra Messianica (1864).
