Christopher Batty was born at Newby Cote, near Settle, Yorkshire, in 1715, and died on April 19, 1797. He was a leading member of the Inghamites, a Christian denomination located primarily in Lancashire and Yorkshire.
Batty assisted James Allen in compiling the Kendal Hymn Book (1757), to which he contributed 31 original hymns. Among these, his missionary hymn "Captain of Thine enlisted host" gained wider adoption in several prominent collections, including C. H. Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book. He also completed his brother William's poem, Messiah's Kingdom, which was published in 1792.
