"Almighty Ruler of the skies" is Isaac Watts's Long Meter paraphrase of Psalm 8:1–2, titled "The Hosanna of the Children; or, Infants praising God." It was first published in his Psalms of David (1719) in five four-line stanzas. In a note accompanying the text, Watts explained that the opening verses were paraphrased in light of Matthew 21:15–16, where Christ applies the Psalmist's words to children crying Hosanna.
Although suitable for Palm Sunday, its overall usage has remained limited. A truncated version omitting stanzas three and five was included in the Leeds Hymn Book (1853) and subsequently copied into the New Congregational Hymn Book.
