Hymns about Scripture

Scripture is the written Word of God, given by inspiration and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. The church receives the Bible as a lamp unto the feet and a light unto the path. Hymns of Scripture celebrate this gift: that God has spoken, that His words are pure, and that His testimonies endure forever. Such songs train congregations to love the Book and to hear it as the voice of the living God.

Biblical faith is never content with vague spirituality. It clings to promises, commandments, histories, and psalms that God Himself has caused to be written. Hymnody about Scripture often praises the Word's clarity, sufficiency, and power to convert the soul. It may also confess neglect and ask for renewed hunger, for man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

In worship, Scripture hymns accompany the reading of the Word, the opening of study, and services that emphasize teaching and preaching. They fit well before sermons and after them, sealing what has been heard. In homes they encourage family Bibles and shared meditation. In personal devotion they remind the reader that study without reverence is incomplete, and reverence without the Word is unanchored.

To sing of Scripture is to rejoice that God has not left Himself without witness in writing. Let these hymns deepen attentiveness, strengthen obedience, and kindle delight in the law of the Lord.
