Anne LeCoy
Biography
Anne K. LeCroy was a 20th-century American scholar, educator, Anglican deacon, translator, and hymnwriter whose career crossed the worlds of university academics and church ministry. Born in 1930, she devoted much of her professional life to higher education, serving for many years as a professor in the Department of English at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. Her academic background and expertise in literary analysis, translation, and linguistics provided a rich foundation for her subsequent work in church literature, liturgical studies, and hymnody.
Following her distinguished career in academia, LeCroy felt called to ordained ministry within the Episcopal Church (Diocese of East Tennessee). She was ordained as a vocational deacon, dedicating her later years to pastoral care, diaconal service, and parish education. During her active ministry, she served faithful appointments at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Kingsport, Tennessee, and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Johnson City, Tennessee. Her unique perspective as both an English scholar and a practicing deacon informed her approach to liturgical writing and text translation, emphasizing linguistic clarity, theological depth, and accessibility for modern congregations.
LeCroy's contributions to hymnody include original text compositions, metrical translations, and collaborative work with contemporary church musicians. Her translated texts and original verses appeared in various denominational supplements and regional hymnals, bridging ancient Christian traditions with modern worship needs. She died in 2016, leaving behind a dual legacy of scholarly dedication in the classroom and faithful diaconal service within the Episcopal Church.
