Elijah Porter Barrows, S.T.D., was born at Mansfield, Connecticut, on January 5, 1805. He graduated from Yale College in 1826 and was ordained to the ministry in 1832. He served as pastor of the First Free Presbyterian Church in New York City from 1835 to 1837, Professor of Sacred Literature at Western Reserve College from 1837 to 1852, Professor of Hebrew at Andover Theological Seminary from 1853 to 1866, and Professor of Hebrew at Oberlin College starting in 1872. Barrows published several academic works, including Companion to the Bible (1869) and Sacred Geography and Antiquities (1872).
In 1846, while residing in Hudson, Ohio, Barrows wrote the hymn "Hallelujah, Christ is mine." The hymn was taken to Constantinople by a missionary and translated into several languages before its official English publication in the Oberlin Manual of Praise (1880).
