Written by Sarah Slinn, this missionary hymn appeared in John Dobell's New Selection (1806, No. 432) in six stanzas of four lines. Five of its stanzas were adapted from J. Griffin's Selection of Missionary & Devotional Hymns (Portsea, 1797). The text was later re-written for American hymnals by Leonard Bacon under the opening line "Though now the nations sit beneath."
