Written for the opening of a new place of worship at Oakham, this six-stanza hymn by Philip Doddridge was published posthumously by Job Orton in 1755 (No. 49). It gained wide popularity in America, where an altered version beginning "And wilt Thou, O Eternal God" entered the American Prayer Book Collection in 1826. A three-stanza cento starting "Great God, Thy watchful care we bless" was also included in the 1875 Wesleyan Hymn Book.
