Composed by Henry Alford, Dean of Canterbury, this hymn for St. Matthew's Day was included in his Year of Praise (1867, No. 261). Although dated 1844 in his later Poetical Works, its earliest known publication is in J. A. Johnston's English Hymnal (1852, No. 205), where it was printed with an added doxology.
