Composed by Philip Doddridge in five stanzas of four lines under the title "Nearness to God thro' Christ," this hymn exists in early manuscript form with variations from the text published posthumously by Job Orton in Doddridge's Hymns (1755). A revised edition was published in 1839 by John Doddridge Humphreys in Scripture Hymns. While the complete original text saw limited use, an adapted cento combining stanzas one and two with additional lines derived from Doddridge's "High let us swell our tuneful notes" gained extensive popularity in the United States, entering the American Prayer Book Collection in 1826 (No. 95) and the Hymnal of the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1871.
