Based on Isaiah 41:10, this hymn of five stanzas of four lines was first published posthumously by Job Orton in Doddridge's Hymns (1755, No. 98) with the title "The timorous Saint encouraged by the Assurance of the Divine Presence and Help." John Doddridge Humphreys reprinted the same text in 1839. In Charles Haddon Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, the second stanza was omitted. A altered cento opening as "Art thou still with us, gracious Lord?" appeared in Lant Carpenter's Unitarian Hymn Book (Bristol, 1831).
