Written by Isaac Watts under the title "Triumph over Death in hope of the Resurrection," this six-stanza hymn appeared in Book II of his Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1707). John Wesley included an altered version in his Psalms and Hymns published at Charleston, South Carolina (1736–1737). Wesley's revised text was later added to the Supplement to the Wesleyan Hymn Book in 1830 and retained with minor abridgments in the 1875 edition. The hymn remains in extensive use throughout American collections.
