Published in Charles Wesley's Hymns and Sacred Poems (1749, vol. ii, No. 233) as a ten-stanza poem in two parts, the first six stanzas were incorporated into the 1780 Wesleyan Hymn Book (No. 535). A cento starting "O let our heart and mind" was created by combining parts of this hymn with stanzas from "Saviour of sinful men" for the Baptist Psalms and Hymns (1858). Another altered selection beginning "And what though now we part" was compiled by James Martineau for his Hymns for the Christian Church and Home (1840) and Hymns of Praise and Prayer (1873).
