Hymns about Communion
Communion, or the Lord's Supper, is the ordinance in which the church remembers Christ's death, feeds upon Him by faith, and proclaims the Lord's death until He come. Bread and cup are given as signs and seals of the new covenant, directing the heart to the body broken and the blood shed for many. Theologically Communion joins remembrance, thanksgiving, fellowship, and hope: the Cross is central, the church is one body, and the feast points forward to the marriage supper of the Lamb. It is not empty ritual when received in faith; nor is it a work that earns salvation. It is grace remembered and grace received.
Communion hymns prepare, accompany, and follow the Table. They often meditate on the Cross, on remembrance of the Savior's love, and on the unity of the Church as one loaf. Themes of self-examination, gratitude, peace, and longing for Christ's return appear frequently. Some texts are solemn and searching; others are quietly joyful. Together they teach that approaching the Table requires reverence without terror for those who trust Christ, and that the ordinance nourishes love for Him and for one another.
In worship these hymns slow the congregation into holy attentiveness, guarding against careless familiarity. They give shared words when individual emotions vary—grief, gratitude, weakness, hope. In devotion between Sundays they keep Calvary near the memory. Teachers use them to explain covenant, remembrance, and worthy participation without inventing superstition. Sung in faith, Communion hymns help the church taste and see that the Lord is good, even as they wait for the day when faith becomes sight.
