Mary, Did You Know?

Mark Alan Lowry (born June 24, 1958) is an American gospel singer, songwriter, comedian, minister, and one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary Southern gospel music. He was born in Houston, Texas, U.S., and began performing music at an early age, recording gospel music when he was just a child. He graduated from Liberty University and went on to spend more than 20 collective years as the baritone singer for the Grammy‑award‑winning Gaither Vocal Band, where his voice, humor, and storytelling became central to the group’s popular sound and the Gaither Homecoming concert and video series.

Lowry is best known worldwide for writing the lyrics to the modern Christmas classic “Mary, Did You Know?” in 1984, with music later composed by Buddy Greene in 1991. The song was first recorded by Michael English and has since become a beloved holiday standard, recorded by hundreds of artists across multiple genres, from Pentatonix and Reba McEntire to Kenny Rogers and Cee Lo Green. This enduring popularity has made it one of the most widely sung contemporary Christmas songs.

Beyond that single song, Lowry has built a broad career as a performer and communicator. He has released more than a dozen albums spanning gospel music and comedy, and he is known for blending heartfelt spiritual insight with warmth and wit in both music and spoken word. His storytelling and humor are key parts of his ministry, and he often uses them to communicate spiritual truths with accessibility and charm.

Throughout his career he has also been recognized for his influence in gospel music, including honors such as the ASCAP Golden Note Award, given for significant achievements in songwriting and music.
