Great is our Redeeming Lord

By Charles Wesley

Lyrics

1. Great is our Redeeming Lord,
in pow'r, and truth, and grace;
Him, by highest heav'n adored,
His church on earth shall praise.
In the city of our God,
In His holy mount below,
publish, spread His name abroad,
and all His greatness show.
2. For Your loving kindness, Lord,
we in Your temple stay;
here Your faithful love record,
Your saving pow'r display.
With Your name Your praise is known,
glorious Your perfections shine;
earth’s remotest bounds shall own
Your works are all divine.
3. See the gospel church secure,
and founded on a rock;
all her promises are sure;
her bulwarks who can shock?
Count her every precious shrine;
tell, to after ages tell:
fortified by pow'r divine,
the church can never fail.
4. Zion’s God is all our own,
who on His love rely;
we His pardoning love have known,
and live to Christ, and die.
To the new Jerusalem
He our faithful guide shall be;
Him we claim, and rest in Him,
through all eternity.

Isaiah 12:2; Psalm 130:7-8; Titus 2:13-14; Revelation 5:9

About This Hymn

“Great Is Our Redeeming Lord” is a hymn by Charles Wesley that celebrates the greatness of Christ in His work of redemption. Wesley, known for his rich theological insight and poetic clarity, presents Christ as the powerful Savior who delivers His people from sin and secures their eternal salvation. The hymn is marked by a tone of joyful confidence and heartfelt praise.

The theme of redemption is central to the hymn. Isaiah 12:2 declares, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid” (KJV). Wesley reflects this confidence by directing the believer’s trust toward the Lord as Redeemer. Salvation is not uncertain or dependent on human effort, but grounded in the strength and faithfulness of God.

Psalm 130:7-8 emphasizes that with the Lord there is mercy and plenteous redemption, and that He will redeem Israel from all iniquities. The hymn echoes this abundance of grace, presenting Christ’s redeeming work as complete and sufficient. There is no sin beyond His power to forgive, and no soul beyond His ability to save.

Titus 2:13-14 speaks of Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify a people for Himself. Wesley’s hymn aligns with this teaching by highlighting both the cost and the purpose of redemption. Christ’s sacrifice not only rescues from sin but also transforms the believer into a life of holiness and devotion.

Revelation 5:9 celebrates the Lamb who was slain and has redeemed people to God by His blood. This heavenly perspective is reflected in the hymn’s tone of triumph and praise. The redeemed respond with worship, recognizing the greatness of the One who has purchased their salvation.

“Great Is Our Redeeming Lord” is a hymn of assurance and exultation. It directs the believer’s attention to the sufficiency of Christ’s work and invites a response of gratitude and praise. Through its strong scriptural foundation and joyful expression, the hymn encourages the church to rejoice in the greatness of their Redeemer and to rest in the salvation He has accomplished.
