"Almighty God of love" is a missionary cento compiled from three entries (Nos. 1157, 1158, and 1159) in Charles Wesley's Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (1762, vol. i, p. 391).

The arrangement was incorporated into the Wesleyan Hymn Book (1780) and retained in subsequent revisions. It was subsequently adopted across numerous Methodist hymnals in Great Britain and North America.
