Henry Bateman was born on March 6, 1802, in Bunhill Row, Finsbury, London. Descended from the Huguenot De Voeux family, he was educated for commercial life and worked as a timber merchant until his death in 1872. A prolific writer of devotional verse, Bateman wrote the majority of his hymns between 1856 and 1864.
His published works include Sunday Sunshine: New Hymns and Poems for the Young (1858) and Heart Melodies: Being 365 New Hymns and Psalms (1862). Over forty of his hymns entered common usage in Sunday school hymnals, valued for their natural, hearty tone and accessible themes. Among his best known devotional pieces is the prayer for divine guidance, "Light of the world! Whose kind and gentle care."
