Published by Isaac Watts in the second edition of his Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1709, Book II, No. 130), this hymn is titled "The New Creation" and consists of six stanzas of four lines. It reflects upon the transforming work of Christ and spiritual regeneration.
The hymn has maintained moderate use in both British and American hymnals. A cento comprising stanzas 4–6, beginning "Mighty Redeemer, set me free," was adopted in several nineteenth-century collections, including the New Congregational Hymn Book (1859).
