Written by the Reverend James Elwin Millard, this festival hymn was composed in honor of Saint Augustine of Canterbury. The text made its initial appearance around 1849 in The Ecclesiastic, alongside a second festival hymn written for Saint Mary Magdalene's Day.
In 1850, Millard included the hymn in his collection Lyra Sanctorum. Owing to its effective commemoration of the early English church reformer, the text was later selected for broad congregational use in The People's Hymnal in 1867.
