Of unknown date and authorship, this Latin hymn to guardian angels appeared in the Corolla Hymnorum (Cologne, 1806, p. 67) and was later documented by H. A. Daniel, Karl Simrock, and H. Bössler. It entered English congregational use through Edward Caswall's translation, "Sweet Angel of mercy," which was published in his Masque of Mary and Other Poems (1858) and included in several Roman Catholic hymnals for schools and missions.
