Written in 1738 at Oxford following Charles Wesley's recovery from a severe illness, this seventeen-stanza thanksgiving text based on 2 Kings 20:1–11 was published in Hymns and Sacred Poems (1739). In 1780, John Wesley extracted a cento beginning "God of my life, what just return" for the Wesleyan Hymn Book (No. 149), which became widely esteemed across Methodist traditions.
