Arm of the Lord, Awake! Awake!
By W. Shrubsole
Lyrics
Put on thy strength, the nations shake,
And let the world, adoring, see
Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee.
"I am Jehovah, God alone."
Thy voice their idols shall confound,
And cast their altars to the ground.
O bring the tribes of Israel home;
And let our wond'ring eyes behold
Gentile and Jews in Jesus' fold.
In every clime of every name;
Let adverse pow'rs before thee fall,
And crown the Saviour Lord of all.

About This Hymn
“Arm of the Lord, Awake! Awake!” is a hymn by William Shrubsole that is shaped as a fervent prayer for God to act powerfully on behalf of His people. The hymn reflects themes of divine intervention, spiritual revival, and confidence in God’s saving strength. Its language is deeply rooted in biblical imagery, especially the Old Testament portrayal of God’s mighty arm delivering His people.
The title comes directly from Isaiah 51:9, “Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord” (KJV). In Scripture, the “arm of the Lord” symbolizes God’s power displayed in acts of salvation and deliverance. Shrubsole uses this imagery to call upon God to reveal His strength once again, just as He had done in former times for Israel.
Psalm 44:23-26 contains a similar cry for divine help, where God’s people plead for Him to arise and redeem them for His mercies’ sake. The hymn reflects this earnest dependence upon God, acknowledging that true help and victory come only from Him.
Habakkuk 3:2 includes the prayer, “O Lord, revive thy work in the midst of the years.” This theme of revival is strongly present in the hymn. Shrubsole desires not only outward deliverance but also spiritual renewal among God’s people, that His power and glory may again be clearly seen.
Ephesians 6:10 exhorts believers to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” While the hymn is a plea for God’s intervention, it also reminds worshippers that spiritual strength comes from reliance upon God rather than human ability.
“Arm of the Lord, Awake! Awake!” is often associated with times of prayer, revival, and national or spiritual crisis. Its tone is urgent yet hopeful, grounded in the confidence that God remains powerful and faithful. Through its scriptural foundation and earnest petitions, the hymn calls believers to seek God’s renewing presence and to trust in His mighty power to save and restore.
