Authored by Charles Wesley, this missionary hymn is a cento composed of stanzas selected from three separate texts in Hymns of Petition and Thanksgiving for the Promise of the Father, published by John and Charles Wesley in 1740. Stanza one is drawn from hymn 18 (stanza 1); stanza two from hymn 21 (stanza 2); and stanzas three and four from hymn 22 (stanzas 1 and 4). It was added to the Supplement to the Wesleyan Hymn Book in 1830 (No. 696). In the 1875 revised edition (No. 443), the final stanza was omitted.
