Hymns about Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the grateful response of those who know every good gift comes from above. Scripture commands, In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Hymns of thanksgiving train the tongue to bless the Lord at all times, not only when provision is plentiful but also when faith must say, The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

Biblical thanksgiving is never vague optimism. It names the Giver and recounts His works: creation, providence, redemption, and daily mercies. Songs of thanks often move from remembrance to offering, presenting praise as a sacrifice. They join naturally with Praise, Prayer, and Worship, for gratitude is the atmosphere in which true worship breathes.

Congregations sing thanksgiving hymns at harvest, at national days of gratitude, after answered prayer, and in ordinary Lord's Day praise that refuses to take grace for granted. In family tables and private journals they teach the habit of noticing mercies. They also heal murmuring by turning complaint into recollection of God's faithfulness.

To give thanks is to confess dependence and delight. May these hymns keep that confession ready on the lips of the church, so that the redeemed may say continually, O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever.
