How Beauteous Are Their Feet

By Isaac Watts

Lyrics

1. How beauteous are their feet,
who stand on Sion's hill,
who bring salvation on their tongues
and words of peace reveal!
2. How happy are our ears
that hear this happy sound,
which kings and prophets waited for,
and sought, but never found!
3. How blessèd are our eyes
that see this heavenly light,
prophets and kings desired it long,
but died without the sight!
4. The Lord makes bare his arm
through all the earth abroad:
Let every nation now behold
their Saviour and their God.

Isaiah 52:7; Romans 10:15; Matthew 28:19–20; Psalm 72:17

About This Hymn

“Blessedness of Gospel Times,” commonly known by its opening line “How Beauteous Are Their Feet,” is a missionary hymn written by Isaac Watts and first published in 1707 in Hymns and Spiritual Songs. The hymn celebrates the spread of the gospel and the joy brought by those who proclaim salvation through Jesus Christ.

Drawing directly from Isaiah 52:7 and Paul’s quotation of that verse in Romans 10:15, Watts magnifies the beauty and honor of gospel messengers, not because of themselves, but because of the message they carry. The hymn rejoices in the announcement of peace with God, forgiveness of sins, and the reign of Christ, all central themes of the New Testament gospel.

The text reflects Watts’s strong conviction that the gospel age is a time of spiritual blessing and light, surpassing the shadows of the Old Testament era. He emphasizes the universal reach of Christ’s kingdom, anticipating the gospel’s advance among the nations and the fulfillment of God’s redemptive purposes across the world.

Another important theme is joy in Christ’s reign. Watts portrays the gospel not merely as information, but as good news that transforms hearts and societies. The coming of Christ’s rule is associated with righteousness, peace, and praise, echoing messianic psalms and prophetic promises found throughout Scripture.

“Blessedness of Gospel Times” has endured as a powerful hymn for missions services, evangelistic gatherings, and celebrations of gospel proclamation. Its strong biblical foundation, clear theology, and triumphant tone continue to encourage believers to value, support, and rejoice in the spreading of the good news of salvation through Christ alone.
