Johann Valentin Andrea was born on August 17, 1586, at Herrenberg in Württemberg, the son of Johannes Andrea, who later became Prelate of Königsbronn. Following university studies and service as a traveling tutor, he served as deacon at Vaihingen, dean at Calw, court preacher at Stuttgart, prelate of Bebenhausen, and prelate of Adelberg. He died at Stuttgart on June 27, 1654. Renowned as a theologian, church reformer, and philanthropist, he was admitted to the Fruitbearing Society in 1646. Poetry was a secondary pursuit in his career, and few of his hymns entered German hymnals. His poem "Edele Lieb, wo bist so gar bei uns verstecket" was translated into English by Catherine Winkworth as "Generous Love! why art thou hidden so on earth?" in 1869.
