James Allen was born at Gayle in Wensleydale, Yorkshire, on June 24, 1734. He was educated with the intention of entering Holy Orders, studying under two clergymen and attending St. John's College, Cambridge, for one year.
Leaving the university in 1752, he joined Benjamin Ingham, founder of the Inghamites, before later aligning himself with the Sandemanians. He eventually built a chapel on his estate at Gayle, where he ministered until his death on October 31, 1804.
Allen published a small volume titled Christian Songs, which contained seventeen hymns. He also served as the primary editor and a principal contributor to the Kendal Hymn Book (1757) and its 1761 Appendix.
