Another day begun!

Composed by the noted hymnwriter John Ellerton on February 13, 1871, this morning hymn was first published in the Parish Magazine in May 1871 as one of a series of three "Week Day Hymns" consisting of five stanzas of four lines, specifically assigned for Tuesday morning use. Later during the same year, the text was officially adopted into the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge publication Church Hymns (Number 56), where minor verbal alterations were introduced into the second and fifth stanzas. In 1882, the Reverend Godfrey Thring included a further revised version in his Church of England Hymn-Book, modifying the third line of the second stanza to read "And let not sin our conscience soil." Despite these editorial variations across collections, Ellerton's original revised form in Church Hymns remained the authorized and standard text throughout British hymnody.
