Based on Ezekiel 34:31, this five-stanza hymn was published by Job Orton in Doddridge's Hymns (1755, No. 144) under the expanded title "God's Condescension in becoming the Shepherd of Men." It was later reprinted in John Doddridge Humphreys's 1839 edition of Doddridge's works.
