Composed by Charles Wesley on the theme of death and eternity, this hymn was first published in six stanzas of eight lines as Number 59 in Hymns for Children (1763). John Wesley included it in the 1780 Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists, and it was retained in the revised edition of 1875. From the Wesleyan hymnal, it entered widespread use across numerous Methodist and evangelical collections in Great Britain and America, frequently appearing in condensed forms.
