"All ye that pass by" is an invitation hymn written by Charles Wesley under the title "Invitation to Sinners." Composed in seven six-line stanzas, it was first published in 1749 in volume one of his Hymns and Sacred Poems (No. 42).
In 1760, Martin Madan included an abridged six-stanza version (omitting stanza four) in his Psalms and Hymns (No. 21). This form was subsequently adopted in Anglican hymnals edited by Richard De Courcy and Richard Conyers, as well as Congregationalist collections by Edward Williams and George Boden. Despite its widespread popularity across various denominations, the hymn was not officially adopted by the Wesleyan Conference until its inclusion in the 1830 Supplement to the Wesleyan Hymn Book. It was retained in the revised 1875 edition and saw extensive use across Great Britain and North America. The original text appears in volume four of The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley (1868–1872).
