Glory to Thee, My God, This Night
By Thomas Ken
Lyrics
For all the blessings of the light.
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath the shelter of Your wings.
The wrong that I have done this day.
May peace with God and neighbor be,
Before I sleep restored to me.
And sweetly sleep the whole night thro'.
Refresh my strength, for Your own sake,
So I may serve You when I wake.
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

About This Hymn
“Glory to Thee, My God, This Night” is one of the most beloved evening hymns of the Christian tradition, written by Bishop Thomas Ken in 1692. Ken originally composed it as part of his private devotional manual for students at Winchester College, where he served as chaplain. His goal was to guide young believers into a pattern of daily prayer, encouraging them to end each day with gratitude, reflection, and renewed dependence upon God. The hymn became widely known because of its sincere tone and clear spiritual focus, and it later became associated with the famous doxology that begins with “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow.”
Psalm 4:8 provides a fitting biblical foundation for the hymn. That verse declares, “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” Ken’s hymn echoes this promise by urging believers to entrust themselves to God’s care as night approaches. The text expresses thanksgiving for God’s preservation, confession of sin, and confidence in divine forgiveness. Its reflective nature invites singers to examine their hearts before resting, seeking God’s mercy and renewing their commitment to holy living.
The hymn has remained popular because of its simplicity, reverence, and clear devotional purpose. Churches around the world continue to use it at evening services, prayer gatherings, and moments of quiet reflection. Through its thoughtful lines, believers are reminded that daily life is sustained by God’s grace and that peaceful rest is a gift from His hand. By ending the day with worship and humble trust, the hymn strengthens faith and encourages a deeper walk with God.
