Composed by Johann Rist, this German Advent hymn was first published in his Sabbatische Seelenlust (Lüneburg, 1651, p. 4) in twelve stanzas of eight lines. It was written upon the Gospel for the First Sunday in Advent (Matthew 21:1-9). The text was included in the Leipzig Vorrath (1673) and the Unverfälschter Liedersegen (1851, No. 1).
The hymn entered English usage primarily through Catherine Winkworth's translation, "Arise, the Kingdom is at hand," published in the second series of Lyra Germanica (1858) and her Chorale Book for England (1863). Other renderings in common use include "Arise, ye heirs of glory" by F. C. C. in Pagenstecher's Collection (1864) and "Awake! sons of the Kingdom" in the Ohio Lutheran Hymnal (1880).
