Written by Charles Coffin, this Whitsuntide hymn was first published in his Hymni Sacri (Paris, 1736, p. 57). It was adopted in the revised Paris Breviary of 1736 as the hymn for Lauds at Whitsuntide, and subsequently included in the modern Breviaries of Lyons and other French dioceses. The Latin text is reprinted in John Henry Newman's Hymni Ecclesiae.

The primary English translation in common use is "Lo, the Father hears our prayer," made by Charles Stuart Calverley for The Hymnary (1872, No. 321). Other early translations were made by John Chandler (1837), Isaac Williams (1839), William John Blew (1852), and John David Chambers (1857).
